Need A Pick-Me-Up? Michelle of OILEES Shares Essential Oils For Everyday Ailments!
“It all started when I began to realise the various benefits of essential oils, from creating a calming ambience to combating flu and fever.” – Michelle, OILEES Founder
Here’s an interesting fact about the human olfactory sense that isn’t discussed nearly enough: Given any scent, it has the power to transform and transport. If you’ve ever been met with a familiar fragrance, it’s likely you were also immediately transported back to another instance in which that fragrance permeated the senses. For some, it’s the scent of family matriarchs cooking; for others, it’s the floral aromas of flowers by their childhood homes.
Whatever the case, we can all agree: scents are powerful, both to jolt the memory, and to create new ones. And one of the strongest ways to evoke scent?
Unwind and relax with essential oils (And some carrier oils for a comforting massage!)
“It’s as natural as you can get.”
As plant extracts, essential oils are one of nature’s best, toxic-free ways to help us heal and beautify our complexion – assuming you get oils of the best quality. As the brains and brawn behind her brainchild OILEES, the onus is on Michelle to source essential oils of the highest quality – which means she’s well-versed and hawk-eyed in seeking out the best!
Of this, she shares, “Consumers should look for companies that are registered with the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA).” It makes sense; as a regulatory agency with stringent processes requiring proper documentation for companies as well as for where products are sourced, NPRA keeps suppliers on their toes, ensuring quality and authenticity of products.
Michelle and her family, whom she cites as being supportive throughout her endeavours; Team OILEES, to us all!
And of course Michelle talks the talk and walks the walk; all OILEES’ oils are registered with the NPRA, and are 100% pure and natural, free from additives and synthetics. “We also list in our website where each oil originates from, as well as other information,” Michelle adds. “These are regularly updated based on batches.”
Talk about being accountable!
Q: How should essential oils be stored so they don’t go rancid or bad? A: Store them in a cool, dry, and dark place. If possible, they should be stored in the fridge to prolong their shelf life; especially citrus oils. Remember, heat, light, and oxygen can cause essential oils to be oxidised.
Naturally, the full-time mother and Essential Oil Extraordinaire is keenly dedicated to the wellbeing of her customers; essentially – pun intended – the idea is to provide quality oils to Malaysians at affordable prices. And while juggling work and life can be a handful, Michelle nonetheless keeps pushing ahead. “It’s honestly very tough,” She admits. “Time management is key, and planning out my daily and weekly schedules help with moving forward. I’m thankful for a supportive family that helps me, too!”
We move on to the brand’s inimitable name. “I bet you’re thinking: Why OILEES? Well, a creative friend of us recommended the name and it just clicked right away!” She shares. “You see, we’re the Lees… and what do we sell?”
Oils – or as we at Poptron would say: An important means to self care.
Q: What’s your personal favourite oil? A: Patchouli! It’s a great oil on its own, as well as for pairing with other oils.
Self care and perfume aside, the benefits of essential oils are incredible and varied – something Michelle is happy to share with us. While her own personal favourite ways to use her products include diffusing paired oils together for therapy and inhaling deeply of a peppermint bottle for headaches, she also has these other fixes and tips to share!
The perfect sinus-clearing starter pack - Cedarwood Himalayan Essential Oil, Frankincense-Serrata Essential Oil, and Peppermint Essential Oil
For clearing sinuses, Peppermint, Cedarwood Himalayan, and Frankincense are all great options, according to Michelle. Used in conjunction with a hot facial steam, these oils will open up your nasal passages with ease!
For massage and self care, Michelle recommends OILEES’ Unwind blend, as well as Lavender to soothe and calm frazzled nerves. She also likes Patchouli! They can be combined with carrier oils, which are also occasionally used topically in place of lotions.
For menstruation pains, Michelle recommends Geranium, which is soothingly floral and herbaceous.
For a good night’s sleep, Michelle opts for OILEES’ Sweet Dreams and Unwind blends, as well as an eternal favourite of sleep-deprived masses: Lavender.
For repelling insects, some good essential oils to use as part of a diffuser are Lavender, Peppermint, and Cedarwood; the herbal woodiness helps to keep the mosquitoes away!
For cleaning surfaces and the air, Lemon essential oil works wonderfully, purifying and deodorising all at the same time!
